5.5 MM Magnetic nutdriver
« on: August 24, 2005, 03:10:57 PM »
Now that I am involved in the high speed color copiers, 2045/2060/6060, I found that my old 5.5 mm nutdriver was not cutting it. The screws on these machines are all 5.5 mm/philips, and many require a magnetic nutdriver to install. Xerox has a nice magnetic 5.5 mm nutdriver, 6 inch shank, 4 inch handle, but they want $45.00 for it. I found an even better one at Ames Supply for $9.00. There are two long drivers, a 5 inch shank (9 inch overall)and a 10 inch shank(13.5 inch overall). There website is WWW.amessupply.com or call 800-323-3856. Part # for 5 inch, 5.5 magnetic nutdriver is 1602000, 10 inch is 1601055. The 10 inch are $12.00 each.
I bought 3 of the 5 inch drivers to supply to my students in training, and one for myself.

Ames, is a good company. I have been dealing with them since I left X. They have a nice web site. But when you go view the tool bag. It is too dark to tell of all the tool pocket. I have a cloth bag from them that hold 14" test pattern with out have to fold them. And it holds my laptop too. But I think I will get the one next time with wheels.

Radio shack sells these tiny " Rare Earth " magnets that can be fitted to any nutdriver or socket. It doesn't allow for a "deep socket" but, how often do you need that.

I would take a regular Craftsman socket or nutdriver and put some bit of rag or something drenched in epoxy or JB weld and then take the magnet and stick it to a screw, then insert the screw into the epoxy sunstance, this would get the proper depth needed. Then 10 min later, remove the screw ..... whooohla a magnetic driver...

DL, as far as the color / offshore, the phillips is also a different type ( depth and angle I think ) and there are many magnetic phillips on the market specific to these screws.

I used to prefer the phillips instead of the mag nutdriver on the Cannon Imagerunners, because, you can angle it a little better getting in tight places.

The nice part about the Ames long 5.5 mm nutdriver is it is made in Germany, very high quality, thin shank and socket end. I use the extra long one to replace bindexer scuffer clutch shaft bearing supports. I drill 3/8 " holes into the bindexer floor plates, insert the long 5.5 nutdriver, and remove the support retainer screws from the bottom of the floorplate. This saves about 5 hours work if the "C" bin bearing  retainer breaks.

Is that the one with the greyish blue handle that has a slender tip ??
That think can take the torque without twisting, and get in tight places.
Definately a bonus above my home-made technique..

Oh, and D.L. .. for the phillips I also suggest an electric screwdriver setup before your wrists get worse :)  .... Cannons were a bitch, but I do not know about the X color high volume..

That I have not try, but I have the 5.5 mm wrench that is 8 to 10" long. I have taken 5.5 mm socket and grind them down and did the same to a ratch on the 1/4 drive.
I have also another 12 point 5.5 mm wrench that I cut and wield it back together but at 10" long.

i recommend an electric driver, if you have changed all the input shafts and bearings on the 4 dev tanks of a 2060/5252/6060 you would have wrists like Popeye!!  its no joke

I have now supplied eight of the Ames nutdrivers to color press techs, and they love them. Most people had the long 5.5mm magnetic from Katun, which they thought was pretty good until they tried the Ames nutdriver. Looks like I will order four more today.

As for the magnetic sockets I stopped by my local autorepair shop when the SNAP-ON truck was there and had him order me the 5.5mm 1/4 drive to $13.00 dollars (4 years ago) and the 7mm was $17.00 and that was for the deep well.
Just don't press the green button!!!
