Verizon Cell Phone Discounts
« on: September 11, 2008, 06:39:10 PM »
Does anyone know if the Verizon Wireless discount is good for Xerox Retiree's also?
I remember that they had to send an email to your company address to verify employment, so I'm betting that retiree's don't get the discount. My contract is up next month and I could really use that 19% now more that ever.

YES , ForcedToRetire , the " Verizon Corporate Discount Program " MAY possibily be available to retirees along with the " Sprint / Nextel " and " ATT Wireless " plans . There are also possible discounts to Xerox retirees available for " Xerox Moving Services " , " Car Rental Programs " , " Automoble Discount Programs " for purchase of vehicles , and purchase of " Dell " and " Apple " computers .

I suggest seriously that you , and others here , invest $10 to join A.R.X.E. ( the Association of Retired Xerox Employees ) at :

http://www.arxe.org

to get a complete list of Xerox retiree web sites , links , and special log - in codes for all these benefits for Xerox retirees available on the A.R.X.E. web site . You can join on line . Suggest , ForcedToRetire , that you start with the tab :

" Retire Discount Programs " on the left hand margin of the web site . A.R.X.E. also has a special 10 year subscription rate for $60 bucks . Also keep in mind that the availability of these various programs for Xerox retirees can change at any time so what might be listed at one time may not always be available , but you at least can keep up to date with what might be available by subscribing to A.R.X.E. and keeping up with the various offerings and special web links and codes for all these benefits available to Xerox retirees .

And by the way , ForcedToRetire , A.R.X.E. has a special link for Verizon discounts and says they offer 20% discounts for various plans and 25% discounts on phones and accessories .

O.K.  I registered on A.R.X.E. for one year to see what they offer. I sent my check today. I wish they had set up a PayPal account so I could get quicker access. It says that it may take as long as 90 days to get a username and pw.
There is mention on the home page that -  "In response to inquiries about the status and safety of the current 401K "Income Fund", the chief investment officer of Xerox has indicated that the Benefit Center has had a recently developed FAQ ... "
Can you give me any more on this or do I have to wait for my access?

That FAQ is on the Hewitt web site, which as a retiree I assume you have access to. Its where your 401k money info is. On the right hand side of the Hewitt opening screen , in the drop down window, select  "forms and material" and go. In the new window its one of about a dozen PDF's. I moved all my money into that fund in Jan. and glad I did. When what you have is all there is going to be you have to be careful. This is NOT a recommendation, just saying what I did.

Thanks. I liked the Hewitt site much better before they changed it. I have a hard time finding anything on it now. I also moved all into that fund, unfortunately I held out until the end of Feb. but I'm glad I didn't wait any longer than that. Probably won't be able to use any of the stock options before they expire now either. I always knew the market would crash whatever year I retired.

I'm down pretty good in our 401(k) year to date , ForcedToRetire , cause I didn't get out when you did . Congradulations .  :-o

Fortunately I don't have to take any distributions from our 401(k) for at least another year to live . Pulling money out of an old Schwab IRA that was in cash and will sell my old Xerox ESOP shares that I converted to common shares in my brokerage account and paid taxes on years ago when I retired in 2000 with a cost basis of $13.04 / $13.05 a share . I'll sell them hopefully at a profit later this calendar year to take advantage of the new zero percent capital gains IRS regulation change that is available in the 15% marginal income tax bracket . I doult the next administration will extend that loophole past this year .

There's a lot of discussion on the A.R.X.E. web site about the " quality " and safety of that Income Fund you mentioned . Remember the old " Guaranteed " Income plan that Xerox froze years ago cause those insurance companies could NOT pay on their anunity promises . Right now the main topic of discussion on the A.R.X.E. web site is the new Xerox retiree healthcare change just announced on " Today at Xerox " ( TAX ) starting next calendar year on January 1st , 2009 , where " Xerox will no longer provide an allowance to retirees who waive coverage ( " opt - out " ) under the plan . [ In addition , the CMS ( Medicare ) Subsidy allowance will no longer be provided to offset the post - 65 Retiree Flex premiums . It will still be provided to the pre - 65 Retiree Flex participants as a seperate allowance as it was for 2008 . ] "

And " Effective January 1st , 2010 , Xerox will no longer provide a benefit allowance for current and future Medicare - eligible Retiree Flex individuals and their Medicare - eligible spouses / domestic pardners . These individuals will continue to have access to supplemental coverage at the group rate through Xerox . "

" Letters explaning these changes were mailed to affected retirees earlier this week . "

The A.R.X.E. board is considering what action to take and has set up special discusion topics on their web site to deal with questions from their membership on these new Xerox retiree healthcare changes . The times they are - a - changing . Our A.R.X.E. membership will be more important in the future as they fight to maintain our retiree benefits . In spite of the fact there are tens of thousands of Xerox retirees , there are only a little more than a couple thousand A.R.X.E. members . For more information , go to :

http://www.arxe.org

You can join on line and there is a special 10 year membership fee of only $60 bucks still offered I think . Best money a Xerox retiree ever spent .

Hey Allan, have you seen this post on ARXE?

How we can get Allan Coleman to come back.
Doesn't anyone else miss his insight? I would really like to have his opinion on this latest Xerox pullout and also on the financial crisis.

Yes , I saw it , Toner .

David Coriale , chairman of A.R.X.E. , and I agreed that my frequent posting on A.R.X.E. had turned their discussion forum topics into a personal blog .

I usually post now as frequently as I like on any subject I wish on another discussion board at :

http://www.facebook.com/board.php?uid=12649953860

where I was asked by the moderator of that Best Of Breed Investing discussion forum , Patrick Callahan , to start my own topic at :

http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=12649953860&topic=5372

And I am also in communication with a growing group of other A.R.X.E. members via personal email which allows me to get my message out in a manner that better suits my blog style of often off topic writing .

And I still very much support A.R.X.E. and recommend any tech rep that qualifies to join them online at :

http://www.arxe.org

They still have , I think , a special 10 year membership fee of just $60 bucks that I signed for that's got the be the best deal for Xerox retirees .

To bad, I enjoyed your insight as well . Looks like I'll have to create a login and book mark that web page so I can follow what your saying.

It is what it is , Terry .

I still log into A.R.X.E. frequently and answer emails from a growing group of A.R.X.E. members with which I've developed friendships through email . And now that more Xeroids see where else I post regularily , they may join those boards and ask questions over there too . Life's a learning experience .

I got my Verizon cell phone discount by just going to the Verizon website. They must have record on my employee discount and just converted to the retiree discount.
