Anyone running PWS as virtual machine on a Sun System ??
« on: October 01, 2009, 02:45:13 PM »
I've been playing around with virtualization (hardware & software based variants).

I'm wondering if PWS will run inside a Sun system.

It would be like having XP running in a window within DocuSP.

Just a thought. It would come in handy for those with inhouse environments. I would never think to do this in an outside account.

I assume you are attempting to run a PWS within the server?  Some of the older Sun Boxes had PC interface cards available, a complete Win computer on a card that plugged into a pci slot.  You can probably still find those cards on EBAY
The newer DocuSP/FFPS servers are running on X86 boxes, that run XP without any difficulty -but of course not at the same time as Solaris.  The PWS and Solaris could be dual-booted, but you would have to shut down one and re-boot to access the other.  There is a Solaris virtual machine (downloadable from Sun) that runs within XP . . . . .but I've not seen an XP virtual machine that would run within Solaris

I assume that you are trying to emulate the old DT135 with its onboard diagnostic support?   One of the reasons Xerox moved away from that model is it required a software upgrade to update documentation.  That was a big deal with the tapes.  And, we never had SearchLite on the DT135, an important tool.

If this is your goal, another solution would be a full sized PWS box and monitor/keyboard/mouse dedicated to the PWS.  I've seen these at larger accounts with multiple DT/DP, they sit on a roll-around server stand that can be pushed next to the machine being serviced.  The top provides a desk surface, other documentation is stored below.  The top of the machine can be kept clear.  A large monitor makes DC 330 input results easy to see from a distance.   A wireless keyboard allows you to toggle an output from a distance.

Newer laptops provide a better PWS experience than the older ones  (which you still see a lot of out there:    -come on, come on . . .)   Faster processors, more memory, and a 17" screen are all possible.  Personally, I like fast, thin, light, durable,  with a long lasting battery.  This fits into the pocket of my soft toolbag.  I consider it a tool and it's dedicated to that purpose.

I can't answer to it running virtually on a Sun system, but I ran a PWS virtually on a Mac without difficulty. I used Parallels as well as the free VirtualBox environment and I also permanently connected the USB cable so that I can launch VirtualBox any time I want right from my normal computer without needing to plug anything in or otherwise "do" anything.

So while I don't know about Sun specifically (though I know VirtualBox is run by Sun, so maybe that's good for something) the concept of running the PWS virtually wasn't a problem, at least for me.
